Pregnant women infected with the novel coronavirus might be able to pass it to their unborn children, doctors at the Wuhan Children Hospita0 (WCH) l stated Wednesday.
The doctors stated it was possible after an infected coronavirus patient gave delivery to a baby on February 2. The new child was given a test 30 hours later and confirmed to have the virus, the doctors stated.
Wuhan city is the center of the epidemic that has since spread across China and abroad. In mainland China, it has taken the lives of 490 people, and 24,324 infection cases have been confirmed.
The newborn has stable vital symptoms and no fever or cough, but was experiencing shortness of breath, the doctors stated. Chest x-rays showed symptoms of infection, and there had been some irregularities in liver functions.
The hospital further revealed particulars of a second case involving an infant who was born healthy on January 13. The child’s nanny was later diagnosed with the coronavirus and the mother days later. The newborn started showing signs on January 29.
“Whether it was the baby’s nanny who passed to the virus to the mother who handed it to the infant, we can’t be sure in the meanwhile. However, we will confirm that the newborn was in close contact with sufferers infected with the novel coronavirus, which says newborns can also be infected,” Zeng stated.
